Hopefully Lucky.

“Hey bro, should we turn back?” WJ's voice trembled with uncertainty.

I could tell that he was getting a little worried.

A convoy of massive lorries stretched along the side of the road.

Dressed in fancy shiny costumes, the local residents skillfully wielded their drumsticks, creating a resounding symphony of rhythmic beats. Over a hundred individuals amassed at the grand entrance of the Temple, their collective energy pulsating through the air.

Is this why most shops were closed?

There was probably an ongoing festival in this small town that we weren’t aware of!

We’ve already explored three-quarters of this small town on foot. Even Google Maps signaled to us that we were reaching the high road that will take us to the next town — some hundred kilometers away.

Both our stomachs were growling. When we first embarked on this quest, the sun hasn’t even begun to set. But now, after an hour of walking the streets, it was already dark.

Despite all of that, I wasn’t ready to give up.

“One more street,” I said, hopeful that we’ll stumble on one shop that was open.

As we walked down the final street, every other shop had its shutters closed. There were barely any lights on this quiet street. Hope was dwindling as my footsteps became heavier and heavier.

"Alright, let's head back," WJ finally conceded, his tone filled with a tinge of disappointment.

Just at that moment, I saw light emitting from the corner of the street some fifty meters ahead.

"Hey, did you catch a glimpse of that light?" I asked WJ, excitement lacing my words.

He looked at me, his eyes glimmering with a dash of hope.

We quicken our footsteps and sure enough, there was a shop at the corner of the street with a signboard hanging outside that says: “Shang Hao Jia Stir-Fry”.

The shop was beautiful and had a homely vibe. A regal purple curtain gracefully separated the open-concept kitchen from the dining area, adding an element of intrigue. The tantalizing aroma of charred wok delicately wafted through the air.

We were instantly greeted by the burly man in a grey T-shirt and brown berms!

“Please take a seat!” He said in a friendly tone as he passed us a pencil and the menu to check the boxes on the order form.

There were at least over 50 items on the menu — mostly different variants of their signature fried rice.

We were so hungry that we quickly decided on what to get and submitted our order to the burly man.

After taking our orders, he asked: “Where are you guys from? Indonesia?”

"Nope! We're proud Singaporeans!" WJ replied enthusiastically.

"Looks like we rarely get locals in our shop these days!" He chuckled, his tone lighthearted.

We finally ordered two plates of fried rice and an omelet.

The first bite was a revelation... Each grain is perfectly cooked, and infused with an irresistible smoky essence. The succulent chunks of lamb danced on my taste buds, accompanied by the delightful crunch of pork lard. This place is an absolute hidden gem.

I’m proud to say that it was the best one we had on our entire trip!

This place was a true hidden gem.

Perhaps, if you’re hopeful enough, you just might get lucky!

Adventures in Taiwan

This moment took place while I was on an adventure in Taiwan, exploring the beautiful streets and cities.

We were spending a night in this small town called Puli.

Why?

First — It was a convenient location situated at the center of two destinations we wanted to explore. Sun Moon Lake and Hehuan Mountain.

Photo taken on the top of Ci En Pagoda, Sun Moon Lake

Second — It’s simply a small town. And that means this place is bound to be filled with hidden gems at every corner.

And sure enough, this adventure took us on a surprise emotional roller coaster ride.

Notice how this adventure led us to stories?

A quick breakdown:

Situation:

  • Two young men with growling tummies were desperate for food to fill their bellies. So they were on an adventure to find food.

Conflict:

  • But we stumbled upon rows and rows of shops that had their shutters closed. We were this close to giving up hope.

Resolution:

  • But as we pushed on, a glimmer of light appeared at the end of the street. And so, that’s how we found the best fried rice not just in that small town, but on our entire trip!

Conclusion:

  • If you’re hopeful enough, you just might get lucky!

That’s how you craft a story.

Here’s how to craft a story out of ANY ADVENTURE:

You’re on an adventure in search of (something).

But you came across a (conflict).

(Something happened) and you were able to overcome that conflict.

Hence, (insert message of your story).

Hope you enjoyed this one!
