#8 A simple MASTERCLASS on storytelling

4 elements of great stories & why I LOVE McGriddles!

Good Day Brewers - Pang here! ☕

We’re already at issue #8! 🤯

It’s been almost two months since I published my first issue! Can you believe this?

But what's more amazing is that I only had 15 readers at the start. And now?

We just CROSS the 100 BREWERS mark!!!

I appreciate you all for the support thus far.

It’s been fun writing to you and I continue to look forward to crafting a story in every other issue!

Has it been fun for you so far?

YES? NO?

Let me know what you think!                        👇

Estimated reading time: 1,028 words - 4 mins 19 secs

Over the past four weeks, I’ve published four issues, each covering one important element of a story.

In summary, these are the four KEY elements of every great story:

  • A compelling character

    • We talked more about HOW there’s no need to have a HERO in every story. All you need is a compelling character. A protagonist that is RELATABLE. Notice how I turned Corgis into compelling characters in this story?

  • Emotional elements

    • Recently, I’ve pinned a new thread onto my Twitter profile - an emotional story sharing my journey on Twitter and how I hated this journey at the beginning. That’s because everyone else was giving horrible advice that did not work for me. With emotional elements, your audience will FEEL and remember your story.

  • One key moment

    • We discussed more on HOW a moment I witnessed (after my run) could be expanded into a story. All it takes is one moment that IGNITES inspiration for a story idea. Would you have found a story-worthy moment in a swimming complex?

  • Specific details

    • HOW did I make my first dollar and get to 1,000 followers on Twitter? Those details matter. Everyone shares their wins, so what makes mine DIFFERENT from theirs? This is why you’ve got to EXPAND on those details when sharing your story!!

Congratulations!! You’re among the 105 attendees who’ve just completed a MASTERCLASS on storytelling!

(Only after you’ve read till the end)

I know what you must be thinking..

— WHAT!? I just completed a MASTERCLASS!!??

YES, YOU DID! Give yourself a pat on the back!

Oh and I don’t know if you realize this..

But yeah, we did it WITHOUT frameworks too!

I’ve never been a fan of BORING frameworks, but I can understand why frameworks are necessary..

— They help us to learn the ropes through systems.

And so, I’ll be adding some KEY frameworks to my COURSE to aid you with your learning.

Meanwhile, let’s apply all four elements to a story altogether shall we?

And it’s a SIMPLE story that YOU can craft just by living your daily life.

McGriddles - Irresistible

Do you know what I look forward to MOST at Macdonald's?

It’s NOT their Big Mac.

Neither is it their McSpicy.

I mean those are pretty delicious. And I LOVE the Hotcakes too!

But they DON’T HOLD the number ONE spot on my list.

Why not?

Well, it’s simple. If I have a craving for any of those, I could simply grab it ANYTIME.

There’s NO scarcity factor involved here. I could eat my Hotcakes, or McSpicy, or Big Mac ANYTIME!!

But there’s something on the menu.

Something IRRESISTIBLE that’s not available throughout the year.

M c G r i d d l e s.

“FCK YES! McGriddles is FINALLY BACK!

(And I just had it on Wednesday)

I don’t know WHEN they’re back. Or WHY they’re back.

I just know that it’s something I look forward to each time it’s back!!

So I know you must be wondering..

What’s so GOOD about McGriddles?

A piece of sausage (or bacon) and a slice of cheese sandwiched between two pieces of fluffy and thick pancakes.

The pancakes are soft, fluffy, and slightly chewy, with a distinctively sweet and slightly savory taste. They’re also generously dazzled with sweet maple syrup!

When chewed into, the burst of both sweet and savory flavors makes for the PERFECT hearty breakfast! You get the BEST of BOTH WORLDS!

Having a “McGriddles” start to the day always puts a SMILE onto my face.

It’s like receiving a warm hug from a close friend you meet only once or twice a year..

— Comforting and heartwarming at the same time.

This is why I LOVE IT so much!

(And YES! I LIVE TO EAT! I don't want to be on my deathbed questioning why my diet is filled with greens and chicken breast. Moderation is the way to go!)

But all of this got me wondering..

WHY would MacDonald’s not put their BESTSELLER as a permanent item on their menu?

It’s simple:

They make you CRAVE for it.

And when it comes, you simply can’t resist it.

“I’m Lovin’ It”

No, I’m not. I HATE that they don’t make this available all year round.

It makes me DESPERATE to go and grab one when it’s available! Because I MISS it so much!

It’s all part of their marketing strategy to make this a seasonal item..

— So there’s always something to look forward to!

Now YOU KNOW what marketing strategy you could apply to your product or services!

But don't be FOOLED..

This story. It ISN'T about marketing, is it?

It's about LIFE.

How can you simply let your life just wither away without you enjoying moments like this? Without a "friend's hug" to look forward to, life can be rather lonely. Boring.

So what do YOU look forward to in life?

Questions to think about..

How did you FEEL after reading through this story?

Can you resonate with these moments?

Notice a technique I used at the end of the story?

I'll share more about how to use this technique in one of the upcoming issues, so that's something you can look forward to 😉

🦸 A Compelling Character

That’s ME! Am I relatable? Probably.

But ESPECIALLY if you love MacDonald’s as much as I do!

🥰 Emotional Elements

Which moments in the story got you most emotional?

It’s probably this — It’s like receiving a warm hug from a close friend you meet only once or twice a year..

All I did was share my emotions and you’ll be able to FEEL it.

🔑 One Key Moment

Did you spot the key moment here?

It’s in the HOOK — “FCK YES! McGriddles is FINALLY BACK!”

This moment got me EXCITED enough to exercise my DARK ARTS of crafting this story.

🗒️ Specific Details

There are specific details in this story..

— Which not only made this story REAL but also AUTHENTIC.

And plus all of these tap into your imagination!

Noticed how I describe the McGriddles?

So there you have it!

A simple but well-crafted story.

My life isn’t dramatic.

— And your life doesn’t have to be dramatic either.

The art of storytelling lies in transforming little pieces of your daily life into one worthy of a story.

That’s the magic of BREWING stories!

I’ll see you next week with a fresh new story! ☕
